13 Days : Gifts for the Pampered Pet
December 12, 2005

I will let you in on a little secret. I'm a sucker. I have great difficulty walking past a pet store without slipping in to browse the cat toys and cute collars. Thankfully, many of the mainstream retailers are catching on to the growing interest in high quality organic pet products and now carry items like EarthDog's natural hemp collars and Fat Cat Inc's cat toys. Fat Cat Inc. is a delightfully irreverent addition to the world of organic and boutique pet products. Take for instance their description of the Eeek! organic catnip mouse toy:
"No need to jump on a table to exclaim EEEK!! 'cause good news Nelly...It's a fake, it's a fake - and most importantly, we might add, not only is it FAKE, but...(please read this out loud in a voice for all to hear): "NO REAL ANIMAL PARTS ARE USED IN THIS TOY!!!" This toy proves that cats don't have to have real fur from a poor little animal to have a fabulous frolicsome time. FAKE is better. Your cat will love this little guy; our secret ingredient is a teensy rattle and our ZOOM® AROUND THE ROOM HIGH-TEST ORGANIC CATNIP that will activate your Big Game Hunter, Big Time."
And yes, it's true, my cats absolutely love them.
But the gift options for pampered felines does not stop there. No longer the ugly lump of pseudo sheepskin hidden in the corner of the room, pet beds are now designed to be displayed.
Take for example the Kittypod Prrrounge created by acclaimed furniture designer Elizabeth Paige Smith. Made from layers of industrial strength recycled cardboard, bonded together with non toxic adhesive, the Prrrounge is stylish yet functional serving as both a perch and scratching post. A range of Kittypod products and cat furniture is available from the modern sustainable interiors retailer Vivavi.
