15 Days : Give Cherished Memories
December 10, 2005

Perhaps you are ahead of the curve and have already climbed up to the attic to dig out the holiday decorations. I would applaud you for such planning and grace (assuming it wasn't ridiculously early, like having all of your shopping finished in June, or even October.) I, on the other hand, tend to be terminally late with such things and have often been seen decorating just a few days before Christmas. So now that I have finally gotten around to pulling out the box of decorations I am once again struck by the memories and cherished gifts that have been given to me over the years.
But sadly, revisiting these memories today has been bittersweet as I discovered that sometime during the last two years (I spent last winter and spring sailing off the coast of California) a family of mice took up residence in that particular box and ate many of my most treasured gifts. The Christmas stocking knitted by my Grandmother that I have had since a baby, ornaments given by my family and friends. While I mourn the loss I also remember that they are just possessions and we always have the opportunity to create new memories.
It is on that note, of optimism and thoughtful giving, that I encourage you to give gifts that create memories and will continue to bring joy year after year. In my family our parents and grandparents gave the gift of a special ornament every year and when we grew up and moved to our new homes we were given the collection to take with us. Handmade wreaths, stockings or ornaments create tradition. Though often unappreciated by the masses it has been the handmade gifts I have received over the years that mean the most to me. For there is a bit of the person contained within each design. Or give a gift that speaks to a sense of place. This year I will bake my Great Grandmother's traditional Norwegian Julekaka (a sweet christmas bread) and share my family's memories with the friends I gather around me.
What ever you purchase or make, give it with love and take that extra moment to imbue it with conscious choice and timeless style.
