7 Days, But Who's Counting?
February 07, 2006

valentine.jpg

Even though I eschew Valentine's Day I must admit my favorite present last year was a rather lovely potted orchid. The person doing the giving knew of my passion for orchids and gave thoughtfully although one of my other passions, namely chocolate, was woefully omitted.

So, this year I will officially go on record as advocating organic flowers and organic chocolate. Either can make a thoughtful and sustainable gift, but trust me... don't forget the truffles. And while chocolate certainly shouldn't outlast the suitor, the orchid is still going strong.

1 Day : Happy Holidays
December 24, 2005

It is time to slow down, take a deep breath and remember what your family and friends mean to you. Yes, this is a season rife with consumerism and while that often bothers me I remind myself that conscious choice, in the things we buy and the way we live our lives, can make a measurable difference.

Happy holidays to all, I will see you again in the New Year with a fresh upgrade to the site. Stay tuned and have a wonderful week.

5 Days : Organic Gift Baskets
December 20, 2005

hampers.jpg

With only five days to go to in this "30 Days to Christmas" series we are down to the last minute gift ideas. Don't fret, there are still plenty of ways to give sustainable gifts that don't skimp on style and get there in time for Christmas.

For a decidedly british twist consider giving a gift basket full of organic goodies. Called "hampers" in the British isles, they are a wonderful way of introducing a friend or family member to the beauty of organic food.

Viva Terra, one of my favorite online suppliers, has put together a lovely selection of coffee and tea time indulgences in their Organic Coffee Break Set. Filled to the brim with organic fair trade coffee, organic cookies from Duchy Originals, one pound of chocolate covered espresso beans, and six mugs inscribed with gentle daily reminders everything is beautifully presented in a colorful and stylish box made from recycled board. Currently on sale for $129.

If you prefer to shop in person than take a stroll down to your nearest Wild Oats and choose from their large selection of holiday baskets. With a variety of themes including the Italian Feast Basket and the Sweets and Treats Basket it is easy to find a gift to suit any taste.

6 Days : Kee-Ka, Gifts that Matter
December 19, 2005

keeka.jpg

This weekend I took a couple of days off to go over to the mainland and catch up on my holiday shopping. This trip "over town", as Catalina islanders say, put me smack in the middle of the sights and sounds of the holidays where I was once again reminded that Christmas is beloved by children.

Thankfully, the selection of stylish and sustainable gifts for kids is huge this year as many parents are concerned about the materials and environment their child is surrounded with. One of my favorite recent finds is the organic and slightly irreverent clothing company Kee-Ka. Founded by a brother and sister team, Kee-Ka produces several lines including 100% organic cotton clothes for newborns up to six years of age. With fun graphics and messages like "This End Up" or "Little Elf" each item is presented in their unique ready to send packaging. No wrapping required.

Priced from $20 - $35 the full range is available directly from Kee-Ka and a limited selection from Elsewares or Giggle.

9 Days : Loomstate, Man's Best Fashion Friend
December 16, 2005

loomstate.jpg

Guys, are you feeling like women are getting most of the attention and hot new fashions?

Believe it or not, there is a ton of sexy new stuff out there for men. Behind the scenes I have been hunting, gathering resources and putting together a feature article on exactly this subject. So here is my promise to you... over the next few months I will bring you the best of men's sustainable clothing and products. Don't worry ladies, you will still see all of the lovely fashions you have been craving, but now you also get to see the men in some sexy new threads.

Perhaps one of the most successful lines to date is Loomstate, designed by Rogan Gregory (also behind Edun), it is a very fresh brand producing more than just the jeans they are so well known for.

"Loomstate takes inspiration from American manufacturing methods used at the turn of the 19th century, in an age where craftmanship, function and quality were standard."

Using 100% organic cotton, Loomstate's current collection includes jeans, shirts, bags and at the beginning of '06 shoes will be added to the line up. You can find Loomstate in shops across the country so check out their website's Store Finder for your nearest location.

11 Days : The New Taste of Organic Chocolate
December 14, 2005

cocoavino.jpg

For too long organic chocolate has been perceived as the bastard child of gourmet indulgence. Often criticized for its inferior taste and texture, sales have relied heavily on cause marketing rather than communicating quality and luxury. Now, thanks to confectioners seeking out chocolate sourced on the merit of its fine quality and not just organic certification, this perception is rapidly changing.

Domori, known for creating high quality European chocolates, recently introduced a new line called "Chacao Organic" offering 70%, 90% and 100% bars. While I have not yet tasted these new additions, reviews enthusiastically suggest Domori has created a line on par with its already highly respected offerings.

Viva Terra has put together a nicely packaged Organic Chocolate Tasting Set for this holiday season. Currently on sale at $29 it offers a wonderful opportunity to sample a variety of Dagoba's popular bars.

Tasting pure bars at 70% and above allows you to experience the quality and nuance of the chocolate but if you are like me and prefer to experience organic chocolate at its sensual height there is no other way to go than fine truffles or bonbons. With gorgeous titles like "Bachanal" and "Tango Nostalgico" Cocoa Vino creates fair trade organic chocolates infused with wine and spirits like malbec, sambuca and eaux de vie. Holding top honors on my Christmas wish list are their Drunken Figs. Described as "figs gone wild" they are beautifully packaged in a tin with four chocolate covered organic figs filled with vintage port and creamy organic dark chocolate. Sounds absolutely sublime.

Intemperantia, Latin for self-indulgence, has also entered the foray with a selection of traditional swiss style truffles. Made without artificial ingredients, colors, or flavorings they use 100% organic chocolate and come in an exquisite selection of gift packages.

By no means a complete guide these are a few gift ideas from the growing number of fine organic chocolatiers. What are your favorites?

12 Days : Kirsten Muenster Jewelry
December 13, 2005

km_necklace.jpg

While the choices are becoming greater, finding elegant sustainable jewelry can still be challenging. From the sourcing of materials to managing labor and chemicals this business, like any other, is filled with choices. But as I mentioned the options are growing and it is encouraging to see bright young designers like Kirsten Muenster leading the way to more sustainable practices and designs that don't skimp on style.

A graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Kirsten selects materials whose sources do not exploit slave labor or support corrupt organizations. Each necklace, bracelet, or ring she produces using silver, gold and unusual stones is one of a kind. Contact Kirsten directly for information on available pieces and commissions or visit del Mano Gallery.

13 Days : Gifts for the Pampered Pet
December 12, 2005

critters.jpg

I will let you in on a little secret. I'm a sucker. I have great difficulty walking past a pet store without slipping in to browse the cat toys and cute collars. Thankfully, many of the mainstream retailers are catching on to the growing interest in high quality organic pet products and now carry items like EarthDog's natural hemp collars and Fat Cat Inc's cat toys. Fat Cat Inc. is a delightfully irreverent addition to the world of organic and boutique pet products. Take for instance their description of the Eeek! organic catnip mouse toy:
"No need to jump on a table to exclaim EEEK!! 'cause good news Nelly...It's a fake, it's a fake - and most importantly, we might add, not only is it FAKE, but...(please read this out loud in a voice for all to hear): "NO REAL ANIMAL PARTS ARE USED IN THIS TOY!!!" This toy proves that cats don't have to have real fur from a poor little animal to have a fabulous frolicsome time. FAKE is better. Your cat will love this little guy; our secret ingredient is a teensy rattle and our ZOOM® AROUND THE ROOM HIGH-TEST ORGANIC CATNIP that will activate your Big Game Hunter, Big Time."
And yes, it's true, my cats absolutely love them.

But the gift options for pampered felines does not stop there. No longer the ugly lump of pseudo sheepskin hidden in the corner of the room, pet beds are now designed to be displayed.

Take for example the Kittypod Prrrounge created by acclaimed furniture designer Elizabeth Paige Smith. Made from layers of industrial strength recycled cardboard, bonded together with non toxic adhesive, the Prrrounge is stylish yet functional serving as both a perch and scratching post. A range of Kittypod products and cat furniture is available from the modern sustainable interiors retailer Vivavi.

15 Days : Give Cherished Memories
December 10, 2005

wreath.jpg

Perhaps you are ahead of the curve and have already climbed up to the attic to dig out the holiday decorations. I would applaud you for such planning and grace (assuming it wasn't ridiculously early, like having all of your shopping finished in June, or even October.) I, on the other hand, tend to be terminally late with such things and have often been seen decorating just a few days before Christmas. So now that I have finally gotten around to pulling out the box of decorations I am once again struck by the memories and cherished gifts that have been given to me over the years.

But sadly, revisiting these memories today has been bittersweet as I discovered that sometime during the last two years (I spent last winter and spring sailing off the coast of California) a family of mice took up residence in that particular box and ate many of my most treasured gifts. The Christmas stocking knitted by my Grandmother that I have had since a baby, ornaments given by my family and friends. While I mourn the loss I also remember that they are just possessions and we always have the opportunity to create new memories.

It is on that note, of optimism and thoughtful giving, that I encourage you to give gifts that create memories and will continue to bring joy year after year. In my family our parents and grandparents gave the gift of a special ornament every year and when we grew up and moved to our new homes we were given the collection to take with us. Handmade wreaths, stockings or ornaments create tradition. Though often unappreciated by the masses it has been the handmade gifts I have received over the years that mean the most to me. For there is a bit of the person contained within each design. Or give a gift that speaks to a sense of place. This year I will bake my Great Grandmother's traditional Norwegian Julekaka (a sweet christmas bread) and share my family's memories with the friends I gather around me.

What ever you purchase or make, give it with love and take that extra moment to imbue it with conscious choice and timeless style.

18 Days : Sai So, Exquisite Beauty
December 07, 2005

Yes, there is a theme here. Intangible but distinct. By now you may be wondering at the selection of products I have shared with you over the last twelve days. What most have in common (aside from yesterday's more standard fare sacrificed at the alter of wine and good conversation keeping me out pleasantly late) is that by their own merit they ask you to slow down and appreciate quality and beauty. I believe a good gift will reflect both the giver and receiver, that it should embody intent. Design is a signal of intention as is the sharing of gifts, the sharing of one's own passions and desires. Many a gift I have given that I first coveted myself. Tonight, I bring you one of my favorite discoveries, Sai So.

Sai So, which translates as "reconstructed" or "put together again" in Japanese, takes the finest silk of antique hand painted kimonos to create contemporary fashion pieces, accessories and interior designs. Deeply sensual and reflective of centuries rich cultural heritage Sai So crafts unique, exquisite beauty. From scarves to evening gowns and pillows to lighting, consider giving a one of a kind gift filled with reverence and art.

19 Days : Bamboo Bath Accessories
December 06, 2005

bathset.jpg

I love seeing bamboo pop up in mainstream shops and boutiques. Very much the wonder material of the year it has been turned into everything from luxuriously soft clothing to flooring and cabinets. Here we see its versatility applied to a more traditional yet elegant use.

Purchased separately the set consists of a waste basket, toothbrush holder, tumbler, apothecary jar, vanity tray, soap dish and lotion dispenser. Many of these items would be equally at home in the kitchen or office and make excellent unisex gifts. Prices range from $9.50 - $49.50 from Frontgate.

21 Days : Enamore Eco Fashion from the UK
December 04, 2005

enamore.jpg

Enamore, launched in 2004 by designer Jenny McPherson, is a newcomer to the world of eco fashion and while relatively unknown in the U.S. I would venture to predict they will be making quite a splash on this side of the pond.

McPherson's philosophy is to create beautiful clothing made from natural organic textiles and recycled fabrics. Using materials like organic cotton, bamboo and hemp Enamore has an edgy nouveau romantic look that is equally at home on the British catwalk or the streets of L.A.

If you are in the U.K. take a trip down to Equa in London or visit The Natural Store online and shower your eco-fashonista friends with some unique threads.

22 Days : Give the Gift of Inner Beauty
December 03, 2005

in.jpg

Horst Rechelbacher, the founder of Aveda, gives us a new company called Intelligent Nutrients. It is easy to wonder how did Horst jump from building the natural cosmetic giant Aveda to starting a company specializing in sustainably grown functional foods and nutraceuticals? The simple answer is he believes in taking a whole body approach to beauty and a holistic approach to business.

Take the Innercalm Organic Dark Chocolate Bar for example. Sporting ingredients like 74% organic and fairtrade dark chocolate (for its antioxidant power), L-theanine (to promote relaxation), organic blueberries and Australian sandalwood oil this is an indulgence that you can truly feel good about. The fun doesn't stop there, gift sets include the Love Therapy Gift Box designed to enhance your sex life and the Winter Warmup Gift Box including organic/fairtrade cocoa, hand roasted organic/fairtrade coffee, organic agave sweetener, and two Innercalm chocolate bars. At last, someone brings us sensual nutrition.

Available online at Intelligent Nutrients or your local Aveda lifestyle store.

25 Days : Give the Gift of Knowledge
November 30, 2005

Ok, so you have someone in your life in desperate need of inspiring. Perhaps your old friend Betsy who keeps saying she would love to be "green" but doesn't want to look or live like a hippy. Now you know it doesn't have to be that way (you read this blog right!) and I know that, but dear darling Betsy just needs a helpful nudge in the right direction.

This is where the old adage "Show, don't tell" comes into play. Shower her with a gift subscription to a magazine that will keep giving each month. The good news is the choices are plentiful. Natural Home and Garden is a wonderful introduction for the person interested in greening their home environment, Plenty offers a smart look at eco living, Ode presents an optimistic international perspective and an intriguing new offering called Sublime is shaping up in the wings for release early next year.

Updated 12-02-05 due to the unfortunate news that Organic Style will no longer be published and Breathe may no longer be published.

While at the Green Festival in San Francisco I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda Searancke of NUI Organics. A native Kiwi and enthusiastic proponent of high end sustainable style she was a delight to speak with. As she showed me their products I was stunned by how soft these baby blankets are. Undyed and unbleached there are no harmful chemicals to irritate baby's delicate skin.

So if you know someone who has a baby or will soon be bringing one into the world help give their little one a warm and cozy start to life. $160 from giggle

30 Days : Plush Cotton Luxury
November 25, 2005

loop.jpg

With thirty days to go till Christmas I have been thinking quite a lot about the impact one person can make this holiday season. There is no doubt about it, our individual power as consumers may in fact be the most valuable tool we have for social change and by purchasing well designed, organic or sustainable products we can rest easy when it comes time to pull out the egg nog and light the candles.

So here is an idea to kick off your holiday shopping. Organic cotton towels can make a luxurious and affordable gift. Loop caters to both the spa and home market offering plush and absorbent 650 GSM (grams per square meter) towels, hand towels, wash cloths, bath mats and sets. Prices range from $9 - $61. However, if you would like that little bit of extra luxury Anna Sova carries both 700 GSM and 830 GSM bath sheets as well as towels, hand towels, wash cloths, bath mats and sets. Available in a variety of rich colors prices range from $7 - $293. The best part about it is the 830 GSM bath sheets are on sale for 50% off at $30 each.

So, getting back to the concept that a gift really can make a difference, every organic cotton towel you purchase saves one pound of pesticides and fertilizers from going into the environment. Source: Sustainable Cotton Project
