19 Days : Bamboo Bath Accessories
December 06, 2005

I love seeing bamboo pop up in mainstream shops and boutiques. Very much the wonder material of the year it has been turned into everything from luxuriously soft clothing to flooring and cabinets. Here we see its versatility applied to a more traditional yet elegant use.
Purchased separately the set consists of a waste basket, toothbrush holder, tumbler, apothecary jar, vanity tray, soap dish and lotion dispenser. Many of these items would be equally at home in the kitchen or office and make excellent unisex gifts. Prices range from $9.50 - $49.50 from Frontgate.

30 Days : Plush Cotton Luxury
November 25, 2005

With thirty days to go till Christmas I have been thinking quite a lot about the impact one person can make this holiday season. There is no doubt about it, our individual power as consumers may in fact be the most valuable tool we have for social change and by purchasing well designed, organic or sustainable products we can rest easy when it comes time to pull out the egg nog and light the candles.
So here is an idea to kick off your holiday shopping. Organic cotton towels can make a luxurious and affordable gift. Loop caters to both the spa and home market offering plush and absorbent 650 GSM (grams per square meter) towels, hand towels, wash cloths, bath mats and sets. Prices range from $9 - $61. However, if you would like that little bit of extra luxury Anna Sova carries both 700 GSM and 830 GSM bath sheets as well as towels, hand towels, wash cloths, bath mats and sets. Available in a variety of rich colors prices range from $7 - $293. The best part about it is the 830 GSM bath sheets are on sale for 50% off at $30 each.
So, getting back to the concept that a gift really can make a difference, every organic cotton towel you purchase saves one pound of pesticides and fertilizers from going into the environment. Source: Sustainable Cotton Project

Fair Trade Silk Pillows
October 14, 2005

A couple of weeks back I wrote about the elegant silk wall hangings available from VivaTerra, an online home furnishings supplier dedicated to living in harmony with nature. Like the wall hangings these beautifully crafted silk pillows are made in Cambodia and the business generated supports local village artisans and the welfare of children in need.
In addition to the covers being hand loomed with first grade silk the pillow inserts are filled with kapok, a natural silky fiber sourced from the seed pods of the massive rain-forest kapok tree, and are covered with organic cotton.
Available in both square and oblong sizes the covers and inserts are sold separately.

First LEED Spa
October 03, 2005

While visiting a spa may be an obvious travel choice, the spa lifestyle is a natural fit for sustainable business and design practices. With many spas embracing natural wellness, spa consultants and designers are increasingly turning to sustainable design solutions to give shape to underlying values.
Nusta Spa, is the world’s first spa to be accepted into the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) pilot program for commercial interiors. With a philosophy that spans from client to environment, Nusta, meaning "royalty" in the South American indigenous Quechua language, has a chic urban sustainability. Featuring energy efficient lighting and appliances, low or no VOC paints and adhesives, bamboo as well as reclaimed materials, and a sophisticated air filtration system, Nusta did not stop at the built environment. The spa recycles extensively, choses products and supplies consciously and purchases its power from sustainable sources.
Located in the Dupont Circle area of Washington DC, Nusta offers a full range of spa treatments as well as their own skin care line containing botanical ingredients harvested in an eco-friendly way from South American rainforests.
